Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

In the 5th century, the patron saint of Ireland St. Patrick's role was to spread Christianity and convert the Irish people, who mainly followed Celtic pagan traditions. He died on March 17 sometime around 461 AD, and left us the tradition to celebrate this date as St Patrick’s Day. What started out as a religious feast, the celebration came to be known as a symbol of Irish pride, which started when Ireland was under British rule and trying to reach independence.

Today, St. Patrick's Day is a mainstream cultural event, celebrating Irish identity everywhere.
