About
New Yorker Frederick Winters came to Bellevue in 1916, after spending a decade in Spokane working at Hoyt Brothers Florists, where he met Cecilia Winters. Together, they purchased a farm in the Mercer Slough area and raised all sorts of flowers. He was internationally known as a bulb grower from Bellevue, and they constructed the Winters House in 1929 in the Spanish Eclectic Style. It contains guest houses, bulb houses, and many greenhouses.
The City of Bellevue now owns it. In 1992, it became, and remains, Bellevue's first and only building on the National Register of Historic Places. The home was restored by the Eastside Heritage Center, and together with the city, they've created exhibits and programming at the site.
Since 2016, it's been closed due to construction of the East Link Extension light rail project. The light rail project is expected to conclude at the end of 2025, when the 2 Line connects Bellevue to downtown Seattle.
