About
Step into Washington’s coal mining legacy on Trails Through Time: Bellevue’s Coal Creek History Hike, a guided experience just 30 minutes from Seattle. Led by expert guides from Global Family Travels, this family-friendly hike explores approximately 3.5 miles of scenic forest trails through the Coal Creek Natural Area—once home to four 19th-century coal mining towns. Along the route, hikers will encounter remnants of a forgotten industrial era: the entrance to a mine shaft, the ghostly traces of company towns overtaken by nature, and even the site visited by President Rutherford B. Hayes. Enriched with stories of railroads, booming coal operations, and the lives of the people who powered them, the tour brings the Pacific Northwest’s hidden history to life—right beneath your feet. In addition to historical insight, the hike also highlights native plants and their traditional uses, blending natural education with local lore. Whether you're a curious traveler, history buff, or local looking to reconnect with the land, this tour offers a unique perspective on Bellevue’s roots. These History Hikes are offered twice a week seasonally, with custom dates available for small groups. Great for team outings and educational adventures alike!
